Why is membership important?

We consider Healthy Minds as a ‘community of interest’. We serve, and ‘belong to’, the people of Calderdale, in pursuit of our mission to create better mental health for all.

In order to achieve our mission, our members help us to:
  • Understand the needs of local people voiced by our active membership base that reflects Calderdale communities.
  • Be led by our members through meaningful engagement opportunities to identify needs and co-produce solutions.
  • Advocate for our communities, our organisation, and the voluntary sector on a local, regional and national scale.

When we have lots of individuals and organisations sharing their support, it adds weight to our mission. Just by becoming a member you help us to achieve that mission, because having a strong membership...

  • Bolsters our position as a leading local mental health service.
  • Strengthens our ability to obtain funding.
  • Creates a relationship of accountability, driving us to be better.

About organisational membership:
  • Organisational membership is an opportunity for businesses and groups to show their support for our mission for better mental health in Calderdale.
  • We are keen to work with organisations in a bespoke way to create meaningful relationships. We want to know how organisations would like to benefit from being a member, and use this learning to continually develop our membership offer.
  • Please note that organisational members are a non-voting group of members. This means that organisations do not have the right to a vote at our AGM. This is in order to enable a wide range of organisations to be members without resulting in any conflict of interest.

Our roots

We began in 2007 as a small group of people who saw and felt the 'gaps' in services where people's needs were not being met.

From the start, our organisation was led by the people who used it. This small group worked together to continually identify what people needed and how Healthy Minds could support these needs, relying on small grant funding and gradually building a group of committed volunteers and staff.

When we formalised our organisation in 2009, a membership structure felt like the best choice, as we see ourselves as a 'community of interest', we serve, and ‘belong to’, the people of Calderdale, in pursuit of our mission to create better mental health for all.

Our structure

Healthy Minds is a membership organisation. This means that the structure of our Charity is made up of:

A Board of Trustees: a small group of people who oversee the Charity's business (also known as 'Directors'). Trustees are legally responsible for looking after our organisation. They ensure that the staff team has the resource and skills needed to responsibly carry out the Charity's activities.

and

Members: a larger group of people who care about the objectives of our Charity, and who want to see it succeed. Members help to guide the organisation and can make certain decisions, such as who to appoint onto the board of Trustees.

The Board of Trustees oversees the team that carries out our Charity's activity - this team is made up of employed Staff Members as well as Volunteers.

The Beneficiaries (sometimes called 'service users') are people who access the services that our Charity provides.
