Your GP
For most, the first port of call will be your GP. Try to explain honestly what's happening - bring someone with you, if that helps. GPs are likely to offer medication and / or talking therapy as first steps, depending on the issues.
NHS Calderdale Talking Therapies for anxiety and depression
Usually, a first referral will be to NHS Calderdale Talking Therapies. In Calderdale, Talking Therapies is provided by VitaMinds and South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SWYPFT) You can refer yourself online or over the telephone. They will do an initial assessment with you, and then agree next steps. NHS Calderdale Talking Therapies usually offers 6-8 therapy sessions but may offer longer-term therapy. Find more information on the website here.
NHS secondary mental health services
Provided by SWYPFT in Calderdale, these are community mental health teams and specialist services, usually longer-term than Talking Therapies. SWYPFT also provides inpatient mental health services at Calderdale Royal Hospital - depending on availability, you may be admitted to a ward outside Calderdale (e.g. Dewsbury or Wakefield). It's worth saying that most people receive treatment in the community (at home or in clinics) - only around 2% SWYPFT patients are admitted to wards.
Contact SWYPFT through the single point of access: 01924 316830 (24 hours) This is also the number to call for crisis support.
Healthy Minds
Not part of the NHS, Healthy Minds' services are an alternative for some people , and you can come to Healthy Minds for additional support if you are receiving treatment elsewhere. We offer peer support groups , activities, courses and workshops, alongside support for other issues that can affect mental health, like financial problems and employment. We also have a team working in the Todmorden area. Our Safespace project offers out-of-hours support at weekends. For younger people, TimeOut works with people aged 13-19. Find out more here or give us a call on 01422 345154 to talk through options.
Healthy Minds doesn't offer one-to-one counselling. We work closely with other services that do and can direct you towards them.
Counselling services
Outside the NHS, you'll usually need to pay for counselling but there are low-cost options in Calderdale. These services will try to reach an affordable agreement with you:
Noah's Ark Centre offers counselling for individuals, children and young people, and families. They also provide free money / debt advice. Contact them on 01422 300457.
Room Inside is based in Halifax and offers lower cost counselling.
There are many private counsellors and therapists working in Calderdale. We strongly recommend finding one registered with the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy, as they will have demonstrated that they meet certain professional standards.
